Library East does not look like a separate building; to the eye, it appears to be merely the northeast corner of Smith Memorial Center. It was built in 1960 and 1963, and has a separate heating and cooling system from the rest of the building, most of its occupants are separate from the "student center" functions of Smith, and its floor levels are slightly different from Smith. There are two entrances to Library East if one is on foot. One is up the stairway just to the west of the entrance to the Information and Academic Support Center (IASC) in 118 Smith Center. The second is up a short flight of five steps from the main hall at the north end of the third floor of Smith Center. There is no access to Library East from the second floor of Smith. Wheelchair-bound individuals may enter Library East by way of the elevator to the west of the IASC, which is labeled E15 above the door. Inside the elevator, button M1 leads to Suite M107 and the offices of the Educational Opportunity Program and Telecommunications. Button 2 leads to the Processing Services Department of the PSU library system. Button M3 leads to the third floor mezzanine, which includes the offices of Counseling and Psychological Services, Testing Service, Oregon Council on Economic Education, Academic Events/Commencement, and Army ROTC. |
