Maintenance Services
Maintenance Services is divided by specialty crews who provide many services to the campus grounds, existing buildings, and equipment on campus. The crews perform services including: building maintenance, electrical, electronic building access security systems, carpentry, locksmithing, painting, systems services, and stores.
Building Maintenance
This crew is composed primarily of carpenters and painters who provide construction and remodeling of classrooms, laboratories, offices, and public space for all types and sizes of projects; repair and maintenance of campus buildings and attachments including: doors, windows, ceilings, roofs, wall surfaces, floors, restrooms, construction/ building signage, and even office furnishings.
Electrical Services
The facilities electrical crew has many responsibilities on campus. We take care of all power and power requirements on campus from our 12,480 volt incoming lines from Portland General Electric to our 12 volt automatic door controls. We are able to accommodate most remodels and additions on campus, doing classroom up grades, new computer labs, and all additional power needs. We also take care of all lamp replacements, offices, and classrooms as well as lab spaces. We also have the responsibility of all fire and security alarms, including installations, upgrades, and code input.
Landscape Services
Landscape Services is responsible for overseeing the cleanliness and livability of Portland State University's outdoor spaces, which includes collecting debris, removing graffiti, and emptying the exterior garbage cans around campus. Horticultural activities include turf, shrub, tree care, and annual color planting. We maintain the campus' hardscapes through sweeping and power washing. Our work includes maintenance of the recreation field, assisting in special events, and installation of new landscape areas. Keeping the campus safe by removing hazards, such as snow is a primary concern of Landscape Services.
Fun Facts
- The Peter Stott Athletic Field is the same synthetic surface played on by 16 NFL teams, including the Seattle Seahawks, Denver Broncos, and Greenbay Packers. The rubber infill material came from over 150,000 recycled athletic shoes.
- There are 106 mature American Elm trees (Ulmus americana) in the park blocks. The City of Portland maintains the trees, but the PSU staff gets to clean up the estimated 30 million leaves that drop each fall.
- Over 2,500 annual color plants get changed out twice each year on campus.
- The ornamental grasses along the Hoffmann walkway are a Feathered Reed Grass, Calamagrostis ‘Carl Forster’.
Systems
The Systems Crew performs a variety of functions on campus, including maintenance and adjustments of the heating and cooling systems, refrigeration equipment, and plumbing.
