2005 Campus Plan
Portland State University is currently in the process of preparing the Portland State University 2005 Campus Plan. Preparation of this Campus Plan comes in the midst of a sustained period of rapid enrollment growth and capital construction. National demographic trends, economic conditions and instructional technology changes have created challenges in meeting the increasing demand for post secondary education. While demand has increased, local land availability and historic funding resources to provide the physical capacity to meet the needs have been unable to keep pace.
To address the current challenges and fulfill its mission, PSU can not be the same University in twelve years that it is today. As regional population and enrollment increase, so will the demand to modernize existing facilities, provide additional academic space and essential support services. It requires strategic development of the University's enrollment and academic visions and the planned physical resources to implement those visions.
The Portland State University 2005 Campus Plan seeks to embrace the recommendations of the campus community and provide the University with the opportunity to meet the current challenges and excel among its peers as an urban university.
Plan Goals
The purpose of this Campus Plan for Portland State University is to accomplish the following goals and establish a physical development process by which the University can excel academically, culturally and socially in a quality urban university environment. The goals of this campus plan are:
- Comply with the Oregon University System requirements for Campus and Capital Construction Planning.
- Identify future quantitative and qualitative improvements required to meet the University Mission.
- Provide a physical development plan that accommodates the projected academic, research and campus living needs of the University.
- Provide a systematic implementation plan for meeting the future facilities and infrastructure needs of the University.
- Provide a facilities implementation plan that informs and supports the University Capital Budget Requests.
Planning Process
In March 2005, President Dan Bernstine appointed an eleven member Campus Physical Planning Committee (CPPC) to advise and lend an academic perspective to the PSU Campus Plan. The committee meets 3:00-4:30p.m. the third Friday of each month in Room 150 of the Native American Student and Community Center (NASC) and are open to the PSU community.
In June 2005, Thomas Hacker Architects, Inc. was selected to assist the campus community in the development of an urban design vision for the Portland State University campus. Thomas Hacker Architects is a nationally recognized firm in campus master planning and buildings for higher education. Over an 8-month period they will work with the Planning Committee, Facilities and Planning, and the PSU community in conceptualizing a campus urban form and character that will meet PSU's projected needs while preserving its unique qualities (http://portfolio.pdx.edu). |
