Space Needs Assessment Committee (SNAC) Portland State University is in the midst of a sustained period of growth. Over the past five years, the university has grown over 33% and is now the largest institution in the Oregon University System (OUS). While its OUS peer institutions saw flat enrollment increases this past fall of 2003, PSU experienced a 5.8% increase. However, with growth come challenges, including those associated with providing adequate infrastructure to serve the current and future needs of our students, faculty, staff, and community. Growing in both student enrollment and research activity will make this a different place, with potentially profound implications for what it means to work here, study here, and live and visit this neighborhood. A bigger Portland State University should not be regarded simply as a bigger version of whom and what we are today. SNAC recommends a planning process to consider both the needs of the core campus as well as the remote learning sites that may become more important to our operations in the future. |
